THE ADVENTURE

Wy'East adventures in Oregon

Travel the actual route Lewis and Clark explored to find their 1805-6 winter camp. Your perspective of their adventure will come alive as you help paddle a 50-foot replica of a Native American dugout canoe. Listen to accounts of their exploits as you pass islands and land formations like Pillar Rock where the party first felt they had seen the Pacific Ocean.

THE ITINERARY

The Trip may include a variety of options that you can choose from. We have activities that give you a feel for what it was like to be on the expedition. Fire building with flint and steel, tastes of types of food used on the original expedition, construct your own leather-bound journal like the one Clark carried, explore road-less islands just to find out what is there, learn native American crafts and games are but a few of the choices.

Our trip may vary in length from a half-day trip to a 6-day, 5-night journey that follows the last 18 days of Lewis and Clark's exploration. It can include an overnight camp-out or a comfortable stay at a local bed & breakfast or motel. Let us design a custom trip to fit your needs and interests.

Trips begin and end in the Lower Columbia river region. We can have start points and destinations that include tours of Fort Clatsop, Cape Disappointment Lewis and Clark interpretive center, and ancient native American village sites close to Astoria, Oregon or Illwaco, Washington.

ELDERHOSTEL

5 days, 4 nights (Intergenerational)

These 4 nights (July 28-Aug 1) are what Elderhostel calls intergenerational. Our program fits folks from 8 to 80+. The trips feature overnight accommodations at the Belltower Inn Bed and Breakfast in Illwaco, Washington; an overnight campout in tents with cots near one of Lewis and Clark's original camps; and a final evening at the Holiday Inn Express in Astoria, Oregon.

To review details and register for Elderhostel trips, go to www.elderhostel.org and refer to trip number 9547UT.

CUSTOMIZE YOUR OWN TRIP

If you would like to design a trip to fit your own needs such as a family reunion, church group or other group trip, contact us by email or phone and we'll set up an opportunity to plan what you'd like from our many offerings.

TALAPAS

Talapas Talapas is a certified Coast Guard inspected passenger vessel with a 42-person capacity. It is primarily paddled from 22 paddling positions, but it has an auxiliary motor for safety back-up. Talapas is inspected annually to meet passenger vessel standards and carries light, sound, first aid and fire safety equipment as well as VHF marine radio communication.

The construction of the Talapas is cedar with foam floatation for added safety. The design is based on the large ocean-going dugout war canoes used by northwest coast Native Americans.
